Cap Spartel & Hercules Caves Tours

Cap Spartel, the lighthouse headland roughly 15 km west of Tangier’s port, and the nearby Hercules Caves are the second-most-reviewed group of offers in Tangier after Chefchaouen: over 4,400 reviews. Most tours last about three hours and combine the lighthouse viewpoint, the caves with their sea opening shaped like a map of Africa and a camel ride, which the best-reviewed offer lists as optional. They differ in the time of day (a sunset version with tea), the group size and whether Achakar Beach is on the route. All are ranked by the number of real reviews.

Good to know: Check three things before the price: whether entrance fees and the camel ride are included, how many people share the vehicle, and where the pick-up is. Sources disagree on what the caves charge at the door, so do not assume it is covered. For a sunset version, look at the start time rather than the word “sunset”, because it moves with the season. The cape is a road trip of about 15 km, not a walk from the centre.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tangier worth a visit, and what is it known for?

Tangier sits at the Strait of Gibraltar, facing Spain, and is known for its medina and Kasbah, the lighthouse headland of Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves. It is a port city rather than a resort: the main sights are compact and one or two days are enough. Many visitors come for a day by ferry from Spain (the Tarifa crossing takes about an hour) or use Tangier as the gateway to Chefchaouen. We list tours that start in Tangier; ferry day trips that start on the Spanish side are not part of this page.

How far is Chefchaouen, and is a day trip from Tangier worth it?

Chefchaouen is roughly 105 to 115 km away, about two hours by road each way. The day trips in our listings last 8 to 11.5 hours and start at €36; the cheapest shared trip leaves about four hours in town. Versions with Tetouan or the Akchour waterfalls are longer and leave less time in Chefchaouen. If the blue town is all you want, a one-way transfer from €29 lets you stay overnight and ride back the next day.

What does a Cap Spartel and Hercules Caves tour include?

Most last about three hours and combine the lighthouse viewpoint at Cap Spartel, roughly 15 km west of the port, with the Hercules Caves and their sea opening shaped like a map of Africa. Prices start at €26. The camel ride is listed as optional by the best-reviewed offer, and sources disagree about what the caves charge at the door, so check on the booking page whether entrance fees are included.

How do I get from the airport or the ferry port into Tangier?

Ibn Battouta Airport is only about 11 km from the city; one source quotes roughly 100 MAD for a daytime taxi, a prebooked private transfer starts at €23.50 on this site. The Tanger Ville ferry port is about 15 minutes by car from the old town. Tanger Med, the big container and ferry port, is about 40 km out, so check which port a transfer refers to before you book.

Can I get from Tangier to Rabat or Casablanca by train?

Yes. The Al Boraq high-speed train takes about 1 hour 20 minutes to Rabat and around 2 hours 10 minutes to Casablanca. Guided day tours by train to Tangier exist, but they start in Rabat or Casablanca and are listed on those cities’ pages, not here.

Is Asilah or Tetouan worth adding?

Asilah, a walled seaside town, is the nearer neighbour at about 45 minutes. A combined trip with Cap Spartel takes 5.5 to 6 hours and starts at €49. Tetouan, with its UNESCO-listed medina, is a day trip of about six hours from €32. Several of the cheaper offers still have few or no reviews, so read the review count as well as the price.

When is the best time to visit Tangier?

Travel-weather sites name September to November and late April to June as the most comfortable periods, with July highs around 29 °C. Rain is sporadic and falls mostly in March and April. These are general climate figures, not a promise for a given week, so check the forecast before booking an outdoor tour such as Cap Spartel.
