Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves from Tangier: Is the Camel Ride Tour Worth It?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read

A line of riders on camels walking along a sandy beach with Atlantic waves behind them

Yes for most visitors, if you have one free afternoon and no car. The Cap Spartel and Hercules Cave tour with camel ride costs €27 per person for three hours and has 4.7 stars from 2,007 reviews, the second most-reviewed offer in Tangier after the Chefchaouen day trip. It is a short, easy outing that gets you to the headland west of the city without arranging transport. It is not for anyone who wants a quiet nature walk or who dislikes riding animals.

What the three hours cover

Cap Spartel is the headland at the north-western tip of Africa, with a lighthouse, and it is traditionally described as the point where the Atlantic and the Mediterranean meet. The Hercules Caves lie about 14 km west of Tangier, close to the cape. Visitor guides often point out that the sea-facing opening is shaped like a map of Africa, and the caves are the stop that gives the tour its name. The camel ride takes place on the Atlantic beach nearby.

Because the stops are close together, the tour is mostly sitting in a vehicle and then stepping out for photographs. That is its appeal: you see three well-known places in one afternoon. It is also its limit. Three hours across several stops leaves little time at each one.

Price will not separate the three €27 tours, so the details do. The first is the most-reviewed and describes a small group, with the camel ride optional, which matters if you would rather not ride. The second spells out hotel pickup and adds Achakar Beach and a drive past the Royal Palace, so choose it if pickup from your hotel is what you need. The third gives a similar outline with fewer words about pickup. The private tour costs €22 more per person than the group tours; its 4.9 rating rests on 15 reviews, which is too few to read much into.

Entry fees and what is not in the price

The cape and its lighthouse area are reported to be free to visit, but the Hercules Caves have charged an entrance fee. Travel guides disagree: roughly 10 to 30 dirhams for foreign adults, with the caves open from about 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Those figures can change, and none of the three tours says on its summary whether the cave ticket is included. Look for it on the booking page, and carry some dirhams in case you pay at the gate. The same goes for tips and extras at the beach: ask the guide what is included before the ride starts.

When not to book

Skip it if you dislike crowded viewpoints, since this is one of the best-known outings from Tangier and groups share the same stops. Think twice if camels make you uneasy; the first tour makes the ride optional, so you can still see the cape and caves. If you have mobility problems, ask the provider before booking: the summaries say nothing about walking distances or steps, and we cannot confirm access.

Our recommendation

Book the most-reviewed tour at €27 for the simplest version. Pick the hotel-pickup tour if pickup matters, and the private tour if you want the cape to yourselves. If you would rather see the same places at sunset, compare the options on the Cap Spartel and Hercules Caves tours page.
