Chefchaouen from Tangier: Day Tour, Transfer or Bus?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 6 min read
For most visitors, the Chefchaouen day trip with a local guide is the easiest way to see the Blue City from Tangier. It costs €42 per person, lasts 9.5 to 10 hours, includes pickup and drop-off, and has 4.7 stars from 4,174 reviews, more than any other Tangier offer. If you do not need a guide, the shared day trip at €36 has 4.8 stars from 1,347 reviews and about four hours in town. If Chefchaouen is a stop on a longer route, skip the day tour and take a one-way transfer or the bus.
The options side by side
| Option | Duration | From | Rating | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Day trip with local guide | 9.5–10 hours | €42 | 4.7 (4,174) | First-timers who want someone to explain the town |
| Shared day trip | 9 hours | €36 | 4.8 (1,347) | Wandering at your own pace |
| Excursion with hotel pickup | 10 hours | €36 | 4.8 (153) | A shared round trip collected from your hotel |
| Chefchaouen and Tetouan day trip | 11 hours | €59 | 4.6 (1,001) | Two towns in one long day |
| One-way transfer | 2.5 hours | €29 | 4.7 (262) | Sleeping in Chefchaouen |
What a day tour really gives you
A day tour looks generous at nine or ten hours. The shared trip’s own description says you get around four hours in the Blue City, and the one-way transfer is listed at 2.5 hours. Put the two together and roughly five hours of a nine-hour day go on the road and on stops along the way. That is enough to walk the medina, take photographs and sit down for a mint tea. It is not enough to hike or to see the town without crowds.
The guided version adds a person who explains the streets and local history, with pickup and drop-off included. The cheaper shared trip leaves you to wander. Which is better depends on you: a guide helps on a first visit, but if you like to follow your own nose through alleys, the €6 saved is a fair trade.

Adding Tetouan, or the waterfalls
The Chefchaouen and Tetouan trip costs €59 and lasts 11 hours. Its description promises the blue medina first and then a guided tour of Tetouan. With a second town in the same day, ask the booking page how much time you get in each. If waterfalls appeal more than a second old town, there is also a Chefchaouen and Akchour Waterfalls day trip at €65 for 11.5 hours. Both are long days; neither suits anyone who gets restless on the road.
One-way transfer, bus or shared taxi
A one-way transfer makes sense if you will spend the night in Chefchaouen. The Tangier to Chefchaouen transfer costs €29 per person for about 2.5 hours. A second shared one-way transfer, also €29, mentions hotel pickup and a choice of two meeting points; it has only 50 reviews, so read the details before booking.
The public bus is cheaper. Travel guides report that CTM, the national coach company, runs roughly six services a day, takes about 2 hours 15 minutes to 2 hours 40 minutes and costs around 80 dirhams, about €8. Supratours is reported to run a single daily bus on this route. Shared grand taxis are reported at 70 to 100 dirhams and a similar journey time. Fares and timetables change, so confirm them at the station or on the operator’s website. The compromise is clear: the bus saves roughly €21 against the transfer, but you find the station, buy the ticket and get from the bus stop to your hotel yourself.
If you are weighing a rental car instead, you can compare rental cars for Tangier. It only pays off if you want stops on the way or plan to continue beyond Chefchaouen; for a single day, a tour is simpler. Check the excess and what the CDW covers with the provider before you book.
When Chefchaouen is a poor fit for a day trip
Skip the day tour if you travel with small children who dislike long journeys, or if you want to photograph the alleys in the quiet early hours. In both cases an overnight stay, reached by transfer or bus, works better. Going the other way, from Tangier onward to Fès, there is also a one- or two-day transfer via Chefchaouen from €66.45.
Our recommendation
Book the guided day trip if this is your first visit and you want one purchase that covers the whole day. Choose the shared day trip if you prefer to explore alone. Use the transfer or the bus only when Chefchaouen is where you sleep. All the Tangier options are collected on the Chefchaouen day trips page, and the transfers page lists the one-way options. Before you pay, check pickup times and what is included on each booking page.
