Asilah from Tangier: Day Trip or Train on Your Own?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
For most visitors, the Asilah day trip with Cap Spartel and a camel ride at €49 is the easy way to see the town. It lasts six hours and has 4.8 stars from 94 reviews. If you only want Asilah, the train is much cheaper and quick: reported journey time is about 36 minutes, with fares of 17 to 35 dirhams, roughly €2 to €3.50. The day tours exist mainly for people who also want Cap Spartel and a camel ride in the same trip.
Four day trips, very different prices
| Tour | Duration | From | Rating | What it covers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Asilah, Cap Spartel & Camel Ride | 5.5 hours | €49 | 4.6 (461) | Walking tour of the old city, Hercules Caves, Cape Spartel, camel ride |
| Asilah Day Trip with Cap Spartel & Camel Ride | 6 hours | €49 | 4.8 (94) | Camel ride on the Atlantic beach, Asilah’s medina and murals |
| Asilah Tour with Tea Tasting & Camel Ride | 7 hours | €71.19 | 3.9 (18) | Hotel transfers, Cap Spartel, Hercules Caves, camel ride at Achakar Beach |
| Asilah City Tour: Medina and Beaches | 6 hours | €125 | 4.5 (14) | Asilah’s old town, medina and beaches |
The first two cost the same. The first has far more reviews (461 against 94); the second has the higher rating and spells out the medina and its murals. The €125 tour is the only one focused on Asilah alone, and it costs more than double the others while having only 14 reviews. The €71 tour has a lower rating, 3.9 from 18 reviews, which is a small sample but not an encouraging one.

The catch with the combined tours
Three of the four trips fold Asilah into a day that also includes Cap Spartel, the Hercules Caves and a camel ride. A 5.5- or six-hour trip with that much on the list means Asilah gets only part of the time. The summaries do not state how long you spend in the town, so look on the booking page before you buy. If the old town and murals are the reason you are going, ask yourself whether a camel ride is the better use of those hours.
Going by train
Moroccan Railways (ONCF) runs trains from Tangier to Asilah, reported at roughly every few hours, with second-class fares of 17 to 24 dirhams and first class 25 to 35. Sample departures listed on a route planner were 11:35, 14:25, 16:20 and 19:10. Those are examples, not a timetable; check the current schedule and, above all, the last train back before you leave. The trade-off is clear: you save around €45 against a €49 tour, but you choose your own pace, find your own way from the station and have no commentary.
What there is to see
Asilah is a small, whitewashed walled town on the Atlantic coast, known for painted murals on the medina’s walls and for the International Cultural Moussem, an arts festival at which artists paint new murals, held in recent years in summer and autumn sessions. Dates vary from year to year; check before planning around it. The murals and ramparts are there all year. A couple of hours is enough for the medina and the sea wall; the rest of the day goes to the beach or a long lunch.
When to skip it
Skip the day tours if you only want a short outing near Tangier; a half-day trip to Cap Spartel and the Hercules Caves costs less. Skip the train if you dislike working out transport or have luggage to carry. If you have a full day and prefer to do Asilah properly, either the train or the Asilah-only tour is better than a combined trip.
Our recommendation
Book the €49 day trip with 94 reviews and a 4.8 rating if you want Asilah and Cap Spartel together, or the 5.5-hour version with 461 reviews. Take the train if Asilah alone is the goal. More options are on the day trips from Tangier page.
